In a data driven time where proof is paramount, Scot and Christine will share the successes of driving quality arts and arts integration in South Carolina. Two statewide initiatives have assisted school and districts in growing the arts. These include the South Carolina Department of Education Arts Curricular Innovation Grant program and the Arts in Basic Curriculum Project. Both have been in existence for twenty-five years and have been the means for sustaining arts programs across the state. Join us for a journey of success and sustainability as we learn in and through the arts.

8:30-9:30 am Session 1: 25-years of Growing the Arts in South Carolina by Scot Hockman and Christine Fisher

A more in-depth look at a the ABC Project program model of Arts Integration/Arts Infusion; a sustained, successful arts integration program in place for twenty-five years. Research and documents developed by ABC will be shared on the arts and arts integration in SC. Break out groups will consider/discuss what an art-infused school looks like.

  • planning resources for collaboration and communication
  • alignment of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment across the disciplines
  • forming strong partnerships: The Three Legged Stool

9:45-10:45 am Session 2: Building and Sustaining Strong Arts Integration Programs by Scot Hockman and Christine Fisher

Facilitators will examine models of Fully Arts Infused Schools along with sustained arts integration/infusion programs in traditional schools--to identify effective practice. Small breakout groups will consider sustainability in arts infusion: How is it created? How is it sustained? What does this mean for my work?

11:00 Session 3: Arts-Infusion for Sustainability: Reflect and Connect by Jan Hyatt, Rosemary Omniewski, Cory Wilkerson & Camille Dempsey

Presenters will engage the participants in reflecting on the morning's sessions and connecting to real world experiences.

1:00-2:45 pm Session 4: Exploring Arts-Infusion in Action by Jan Hyatt, Rosemary Omniewski, Cory Wilkerson & Camille Dempsey
After viewing a model of arts infusion from the Art in Action wiki, each member of the group receives a card describing their role as a part of a task force to implement sustainable arts infusion in an imaginary school district. The imaginary task force then meets to discuss implementation of arts infusion and come up with an action plan.

3:00-5:00pm Session 5: Exploring Technology Infusion in Oompa-Loompa Land: Developing Technological, Pedagogical and Arts-Infused Content Knowlege by Camille Dempsey and Jude Shingle

Presenters will address ideas for technology applications in arts-infused residencies. How do technology integration strategies align with how teachers and teaching artists plan educational experiences, rather than designing instruction around the use of particular technologies? How can learning activities be developed that appropriately incorporate technologies, while also addressing educational goals? How can teachers and teaching artists choose among the many educational technologies available, such as arts-related software, Web 2.0 tools, and mobile apps? Participants will explore student activity types through activities that reinforce the TPACK approach to technology integration.

The final day of the Learning Lab features a series of sessions with effective practices in arts infusion presented by classroom teachers, teaching artists and arts educators from several local arts organizations.

8:30-9:15 am Session 6: Visual Learning Strategy by Kelly Armor, Erie Art Museum

Visual Thinking Strategies is a simple but powerful pedagogy that has transformed teachers' and students' lives. It was developed by a museum educator and a cognitive psychologist and is practiced at art museums and schools around the globe. Learn about how this technique gets students to discuss art and experience how it can help you.

9:30-10:15 am Session 7: A Truly Helpful Way to Guide People in Approaching the Residency Process from All Sides by Saihou Njie, Teaching Artist and Patty Martinez, Teacher and Tina Walsh, Art Teacher, Cambridge Springs Elementary School

Learn from those who have participated in the residency experience how to plan collaboratively and ask the right questions to make the most of the skills, talent and knowledge of those involved and create the best learning environment for your students.

10:30-11:15 am Session 8: Concurrent Presentations

A: Making Faces - Saying it With Clay - A Creative Writing Activity by Kathe Umlauf
Participants will be introduced to arts infusion in the classroom, using constructivist learning theory and sculpture. The goal is to deepen learning and understanding of school curriculum through cross brain participation and creativity. Using a small amount of self hardening clay, participants will be guided through the steps of easily making a face. Using this face as the starting point, participants will build a (short) life around this persona, and share it with the class. This process will be interactive and guided.

B: IMPACT! Discuss the Impact of Comics/Animation has Outside the Artroom by Mike Bocianowski
Open discussion and lesson to share experiences and impact on students and links to Common Core with a focus on science with artist Mike Bocianowski, creator of "The YETS!" and PCA rostered teaching artist.

12:30-1:15 pm Session 9: Embracing Change in the Learning for Life Classroom by Richard Skellen, Art Teacher, Ridgway Middle High School

It is obvious that there are changes in the climate of education today. This should not really surprise anyone who has spent more than a moment in education. In fact change is necessary if we are going to keep pace with the needs of our students. We are creatures of habit often bound to ritual like methods and processes that have been successful for us both personally and professionally. It is my suggestion to you to take a chance on change and embrace it with a sense of exploration. I would like to offer you a look at the direction change has taken in one visual arts classroom.

1:30-2:30 pm Session 10: A two-part presentation focusing on community partnerships
